Harassment Documentation Guide

Ramon Martin • March 24, 2023

If you are being harassed, it's important to document the harassment in case you need to take legal action or report it to your employer or the authorities. Here are some steps you can take to document harassment:

  1. Write down the details of the harassment: Include the date, time, location, and a detailed description of what happened. Write down any statements made by the harasser, the names of any witnesses, and how the harassment made you feel.
  2. Keep any physical evidence: If the harassment involved physical objects, such as notes or gifts, keep them as evidence. Take pictures of any physical evidence, such as graffiti or property damage.
  3. Save any electronic evidence: If the harassment was through emails, text messages, social media, or any other electronic means, save the evidence. Take screenshots or print out copies of any electronic communications.
  4. Report the harassment: Report the harassment to the appropriate authority, such as your employer's HR department, the police, or a lawyer. Provide them with the documentation you have collected.
  5. Protect your documentation: Keep your documentation in a safe place, such as a locked file cabinet or password-protected computer. Make backup copies of electronic evidence.

It's important to remember that harassment is never your fault, and you have the right to take action to protect yourself. Don't be afraid to speak up and seek help.
